23445-250247 Core Sample Splitter

23445-250247 Fendeur de carottes d’échantillonnage

Description

The GSC-Pacific Division of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) collects marine sediment cores (long tubes filled with ocean floor mud) to study geological history and processes. These tubes are cut into 1.5m long sections and which must then be split lengthwise in half for detailed analysis. When splitting, the cut of the plastic liner must not penetrate into the sediment material, therefore a precision instrument is required. NRCan’s existing core splitter is over 20 years old and was a custom-made piece of equipment. Parts are starting to fail and there are no off-the-shelf replacement parts. As no drawings exist, we cannot get replacement parts custom manufactured. A replacement core splitter is required.

Quick Summary

The Department of Public Works and Government Services (PSPC) is seeking a replacement core sample splitter for the GSC-Pacific Division of Natural Resources Canada. This precision instrument is needed to split marine sediment core tubes lengthwise without damaging the sediment inside, replacing an outdated and unrepairable custom-made device.
